The tutors at Lancaster & Morecambe College taught me a lot of key skills including customer service, colour and product knowledge and hairdressing theory that I would need in the future. Ann was a great tutor and mentor, and she definitely helped me with my confidence during my time at College.
Courtney knew from an early age that she had a passion for hairdressing. She has family members who had previously studied Hairdressing at Lancaster & Morecambe College and are now very successful within the hairdressing industry. Courtney decided choosing LMC to study a Hairdressing Level 2 Apprenticeship was the right choice for her.
After leaving LMC Courtney gained a a full time position at Prestige Salon in Lancaster. She is now a Style Director, whose responsibilities are to ensure that clients receive a full consultation, and that she is always advising her clients on the right styles for them. It's important that Courtney makes sure they both her and the clients have the same idea of the outcome and desired hair cut or colour inorder to achieve the best results. She also enjoys using the skills she learnt while doing practical work in The Salon at LMC to give 5 star service, always conscience of maintaining a comfortable and friendly environment for everyone that walks through the door of the salon.
My favourite part of the course was getting stuck in with the practical side, being able to colour, highlight and style client’s hair in The Salon. I also loved dealing with real clients, being able to get the experience and share knowledge from my College Tutors and peers.
As well as being a Style Director, Courtney is also the Salon Manager. Managing the salon involves many different challenges including; dealing with customers, the overall running of the business, training Apprentices and handling any issues or enquiries. Courtney is fully confident in being able to use the training she gained from her Apprenticeship in the different areas of her daily role.
Courtney expressed she has a lot to be proud of since completing her course at Lancaster & Morecambe College, including building up a large clientele, having a full column every week, also added to her qualifications and completing further education courses.
I’m very proud of how far I have come, after starting college 7 years ago
We asked Courtney what advise she would pass on to a potential student wanting to do the Hairdressing Apprenticeship, she said:

I love working at Lancaster & Morecambe College with such an amazing team that are passionate about delivering outstanding teaching across the departments. The Apprenticeship courses at LMC are well developed programmes that offer students amazing opportunities and experiences, whilst allowing them to earn while they learn as they progress through the Apprenticeship.
My role is to work alongside the tutors and students to ensure the work placements are secured, completed and recorded in line with procedural requirements. This is a simple description, as there is a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure this happens! I see good communication, administration, attention to detail and patience as key attributes of the role.
I enjoy being part of the team and thinking of new ways to support local businesses in realising their potential. Watching learners transition from a one-day course to gaining qualifications motivates me to continue teaching at LMC.
I really enjoy being part of the LMC Beauty Team and working within the department. Watching my students grow and develop their ideas and skillsets week on week is a really exciting part of my role, particularly when I can see them challenging themselves to get creative and try out new and different ideas.
Try to achieve the best grades you can. As a qualified Carpenter or Joiner, you will have the opportunity to work anywhere in the world.
Welding particularly is like lego for adults – its great fun making things. Whereas Engineering will teach you why things are made the way they are and a combination of both will give you the skills to make almost anything you can think of! Why not give it a go!
